Beshear: Lunsford 'strong' candidate for McConnell's seat

WASHINGTON, DC –Democrat Bruce Lunsford is a strong challenger for the U.S. Senate seat currently held by Republican Mitch McConnell, Democratic Governor Steve Beshear told PolitickerKY.com today.

“(Lunsford) first has to win the primary,” Beshear said. “And, assuming he does, I think he’ll be a strong candidate in the general.”

Beshear, who took office in December after defeating Republican incumbent Ernie Flether by a 59%-41%, said that he has been contacted by representatives from the Clinton and Obama campaigns who have sought his endorsement.

But he says that for now he is remaining uncommitted.

“I’m undecided on that right now,” he said, adding that he has much on his mind with his agenda for Kentucky.
