Kentucky's U.S. Senate race and a U.S. House races both are among the most-competitive elections in the nation this fall, a new Politicker.com report shows.
The Pindell Report, unveiled today, shows U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Louisville) appears to be on his way to remaining in the U.S. Senate where he has been since 1984. That said, the race is viewed to be the 10th most-competitive Senate race in the country this fall.
"Two polls showing the race to be tighter than expected got our attention, but unless Bruce Lunsford capitalizes soon we will lose interest quickly," said Politicker.com Managing Editor James Pindell, referring to the Louisville Democrat trying to unseat McConnell, the U.S. Senate minority leader. "There just doesn't seem to be enough out there to indicate that McConnell is going to be out of a job in November."
The 3rd Congressional District race also caught Politicker.com's attention. The race is ranked the 35th most-competitive House race of the 435 in the country. The race features a rematch from 2006 where Republican Anne Northup wants to gain her seat back from Democrat John Yarmuth. In 2006, Yarmuth defeated Northup by a mere 6,000 votes.
The Pindell Report aims to provide the country's most dynamic and richly reported ranking and analysis of U.S. Senate, U.S. House and gubernatorial races, plus presidential swing states.
The non-partisan report ranks races in order of their competitiveness. Therefore the No. 1 race in the country is the most likely to be decided by one vote. The race ranked last is believed to have a larger margin of victory -- no matter if it is a Republican win or Democratic win. In determining competitiveness the reports takes into account polling, fundraising, past election data, demographic changes and interviews with the nation's top political strategists. The report also heavily uses Politicker.com's reporters out in the field covering these elections for the network's state-based websites. The rankings are evaluated daily ensuring rankings are current.
