Recanvass yields few changes in SD-11, HD-92

The three recanvasses conducted by county elections boards today show no change in the winners of last Tuesday's primary.

Votes in the hotly-contested 11th state Senate District Republican primary were recalculated after former U.S. Marshal and Boone County Jailer John Schickel (R-Union) eeked out a 24 vote win over former state Representative Charlie Walton (R-Florence). Recalculations show no difference in vote counts, and Schickel's win will stand.

Walton requests recanvass in SD-11

The 24 vote margin that propelled former U.S. Marshal and Boone County jailer John Schickel (R-Union) over former state Rep. and school principal Charlie Walton (R-Florence) in last Tuesday's Republican primary in the 11th state Senate district was not surprisingly challenged by Walton.

The Office of the Secretary of State Trey Grayson announced today that the 11th District race would be one of three recanvassed on Thursday morning by state officials.

Results from around the state: A glimpse at three state legislative elections

It wasn't just Federal races that were contested yesterday throughout Kentucky. Here is a look at a few state legislative races of note.

State Senate - 11th District:

Former US Marshall and Boone County Jailer John Schickel (R-Union) squeaked out a win over former state Representative Charlie Walton (R-Florence) in a hotly contested northern Kentucky Republican primary for 11th state Senate seat left open by retiring incumbent Dick Roeding (R-Lakeside Park).

With 100 percent of precints reporting, Shickel won by just 24 votes over Walton - 4,341 to 4,317.

Walton stresses education and experience in SD 11

Charlie Walton (R-Florence) first sought the 11th Charlie WaltonCharlie WaltonState Senate district seat in 2004, when he was defeated in the Republican primary by then-incumbent Dick Roeding (R-Lakeside Park). Walton lost that race 57 to 42 percent.

Walton vacated the 66th State House seat he had held since 1992 to run in that race. During two years of that period, Walton served as Minority Whip.

State Senator Dick Roeding (R-Lakeside Park)State Senator Dick Roeding (R-Lakeside Park)John Schickel’s bid for the Republican nomination in Kentucky’s open 11th State Senate District began in earnest on January 2, 2008. Then, retiring incumbent State Senator Dick Roeding  announced he was throwing his support behind Schickel. “I’ve always enjoyed public service,” said Schickel. “When Senator Roeding said he was thinking about retiring, he asked me to run for his seat.” The incumbent’s endorsement comes with significant weight behind it. Roeding will have served 19 years in the state Senate at the end of his term, with five of those as Senate president pro tem.
