U.S. Sen. John McCain's (R-Ariz.) choice of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin (R) for his vice presidential running mate came as a surprise to almost everyone.
She was little-known outside of her home state. During her 2006 gubernatorial campaign, she collected only a handful of contributions from 18 states other than her own. Hardly surprising or out of the ordinary for a state-level race, but it suggests she does not have a national fundraising network.
Palin collected just one $50 check from John Bender of Lexington for her gubernatorial campaign.
