Northup closes out 2Q with $800K on hand

The campaign of former U.S. Rep Anne Northup (R-Louisville) will report it raised $625,000 in the second fundraising quarter of 2008 to end the period with $819,000 on hand, according to a spokesman for the campaign.

Since Northup jumped in the 3rd Congressional District race in January, she has raised a total of $1.1 million.

Her campaign has been bolstered by out-of-state fundraising help on at least one occasion, when GOPAC chairman and former Maryland Lt. Gov. Michael Steele appeared in Louisville at an event on her behalf.

"Given the difficult political environment out there on both sides of the aisle, this is a good sign people are in support of what Anne is doing with her campaign and that they will continue to support her through November," said Scott Will, Northup's campaign manager.

During part of the second quarter - which ran from April 1 to June 30 - Northup was embroiled in a contested primary against three opponents that did necessitate some spending on her part - though she won the race by 55 points.

In the first quarter of this year, Northup collected over $459,000 in contributions.

The $625,000 from the second quarter includes nearly $124,000 raised in April - the last full month before the May 20 primary election.

Northup's second quarter haul this year accounts for more funds than she raised in the same time window during her 2006 bid - when she still had the benefit of incumbency. From April 1 to June 30 of that campaign, Northup brought in just under $400,000.

That year, she faced millionaire businessman John Yarmuth (D-Louisville), who unseated Northup in the November general election. Now, she faces Yarmuth with the title of "incumbent" on his shoulders.

Yarmuth's campaign has yet to release fundraising figures for the second quarter.
