U.S. Rep John Yarmuth (D-Louisville) will enter the third fundraising quarter of 2008 with an advantage in cash-on-hand over his opponent, former U.S. Rep Anne Northup (R-Louisville). Yarmuth's campaign announced today its candidate has just over $1 million on-hand, compared to Northup's $819,000.
Northup, however, outraised the freshman Rep. in the second quarter, collecting $625,000 to Yarmuth's $363,000.
The fundraising race in Kentucky's 3rd Congressional District remains relatively close between the candidates, with each topping a total of a million dollars raised for the total election cycle.
Northup, who entered the campaign in late January, has accumulated over $1.1 million in funds since then. Yarmuth has raised over $1.4 million this entire cycle.
While electoral circumstances necessarily differ, the 2008 race is not the first time Northup and Yarmuth have faced off for the 3rd District. In 2006, the two battled for the first time, with Northup then enjoying the benefits of incumbency.
After ten-years in office, Northup held over $1.8 million on hand after the second quarter ended in 2006. Yarmuth, who won a May primary during that election, emerged from the 2006 second quarter with almost $418,000 on hand.
Then, during the same April 1 to June 30 period which constitutes this year's second quarter reports, Northup raised just over $390,000 while Yarmuth pulled in just over $323,000.
Those numbers were both topped by second quarter fundraising totals from this year's reports.
KY-03
With the powers of incumbency, a democratic year, and the slight democratic lean of this district, Northup has little chance unless she can heavily outspend Yarmuth. She needs something like the order of 2:1. And it's not happening.
