U.S. Rep. John Yarmuth's (D-Louisville) race for the 3rd Congressional District is still the only U.S. House campaign in Kentucky on the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee's list for targeted television ad buys, even after the list was expanded by 20 in recent days.
Yarmuth's re-election effort against former U.S. Rep Anne Northup (R-Louisville) was included in the DCCC's initial target list of 31 races, for which the organization aims to buy ad time in September and October. The DCCC reportedly allocated $659,000 for ad buys in the 3rd District.
The liberal news outlet Talking Points Memo reported yesterday that the DCCC had expanded their list to include 20 more races, but none of the additions are in Kentucky.
According to reports, the DCCC has now allocated a total of $53 million towards ad buys for the 51 targeted races.
The organization had $55 million in the bank as of its last FEC filing.
The Bluegrass state candidate most likely to have been included on the list - but omitted - is state Senator David Boswell (D-Owensboro). Boswell is challenging fellow state Senator Brett Guthrie (R-Bowling Green) in an open seat contest in the 2nd Congressional District.
The 2nd District race was on an early list of DCCC targets, but has been included in neither of the ad buy lists.
Boswell held a narrow lead in the only public polling released on the race thus far, but had a poor second quarter fundraising showing. His $45,000 in cash on-hand led analyst Stuart Rothenberg to declare that, unless a major financial "turnaround" occurs "this race is over."
Other Democratic candidates omitted from the new DCCC lists include Heather Ryan, of Paducah, in the 1st District, Michael Kelley, of LaGrange, in the 4th District, and U.S. Rep Ben Chandler, of Versailles, in the 5th District.
Ryan and Kelley are both running low-budget campaigns against well-funded incumbents. Chandler is facing Lexington Attorney Jon Larson, who is running his own lightly-funded effort against the incumbent Democrat.
