ST. PAUL, Minn. – At last week’s Democratic National Convention in Denver, several prominent Kentucky Democrats discussed their interest in the 2010 U.S. Senate contest. Lt. Gov. Daniel Mongiardo (D-Hazard) indicated he had a “natural interest” in the race as he was the last Democrat to challenge U.S. Sen. Jim Bunning (R-Southgate) for his seat. In addition, state Auditor Crit Luallen (D-Frankfort) noted it was possible she could jump in the race.
In an interview with PolitickerKY.com yesterday, Bunning himself addressed any doubts about his intentions for 2010. When asked if he would run for a third term, Bunning sounded confident.
“As sure as you’re sitting there,” said Bunning.
Bunning added that he would have to start up his fundraising efforts for the race, as his efforts in recent years have been dedicated to other candidates, including Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Louisville), who is up for re-election this year, and former Governor Ernie Fletcher, who lost a re-election bid last year.
“I have worked like hell to make sure that Senator McConnell is re-elected and, last year, Fletcher,” said Bunning.
“The only money I have raised is in my PAC,” added Bunning, referencing his Political Hall of Fame committee, which contributes to the campaigns of Bunning’s favored candidates.
Bunning noted that PAC had given $10,000 each to 2nd Congressional District candidate and state Sen. Brett Guthrie (R-Bowling Green) and 3rd district candidate Anne Northup (R-Louisville).
Bunning beat Mongiardo in 2004 by just over one point.
