Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Bruce Lunsford lined up another endorsement today in his bid to win his party's nomination and a chance to unseat four-term incumbent U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Louisville).
Former Kentucky Secretary of State John Y. Brown, III announced his support of Lunsford via email this afternoon. Brown touted Lunsford's other endorsements and high poll numbers in support of his candidacy.
"Bruce is the Democratic candidate with the best chance of beating Mitch McConnell. Bruce received the endorsement of the labor organizations Change to Win and the AFL-CIO because they know he will fight for the 175,000 Kentucky families they represent. He received the endorsement of Iraq war veteran Col. Andrew Horne because Col. Horne knows Bruce will fight to protect our troops and our veterans," reads the email attributed to Brown. "The people of Kentucky already understand Bruce is the right Democrat to take on McConnell.
Last week, a public poll by WHAS TV showed likely voters overwhelmingly chose Bruce above any other Democrat." Recent poll results find Lunsford up 31 points over his nearest competition.
Brown sought the Democratic nomination for Lt. Governor in 2007 on a ticket with current State House Speaker Jody Richards. That ticket finished fourth behind one headed by the ultimate winner Steve Beshear and another led by Lunsford.
Previously, Brown served two terms as Secretary of State, from 1995-2003. He is the son of former Democratic governor and principal KFC investor John Y. Brown, Jr.
