David Boswell (D-Sorgho) at the Owensboro International BBQ Festival Political Forum
While state Senator David Boswell's (D-Sorgho) opponent in the 2nd Congressional District Democratic primary has focused its efforts on a television campaign, Boswell is hoping to win today off of a different set of tactics.
"We hung our hat mostly on mail and getting out and working," said Boswell spokesman, Jim Cole. "We've been re-introducing him with mail and personal contact."
Boswell and his opponent, Daviess County Judge/Executive Reid Haire, both hail from the Owensboro area and both have run campaigns that rarely acknowledge the other.
Each candidate has largely focused on their own theme, which for Boswell is an accentuation of his experience as a legislator and former Commissioner of Agriculture. It is this and name recognition from this experience which could provide Boswell with a boost in today's primary, while the same claim could be made by Haire based on his decade-long tenure in his current Judge/Executive position.
Cole said the direct-mail effort would reach many of those already familiar with Boswell, but the campaign also invested in radio advertisements because of the expected increase in turnout due to the competitive presidential primary in Kentucky.
"Because there is still a presidential primary, there is an expanded universe of voters," said Cole. "We used radio for that."
Cole speculated that the increased turnout would nonetheless "slightly advantage" Boswell in today's primary.
