Under the shadow of a potential special legislative session in Frankfort - should an agreement on pensions be reached by state legislators - the campaign of state Senator Brett Guthrie (R-Bowling Green) indicated its candidate wouldn't neglect his current job even as he seeks a new one - specifically the 2nd Congressional District seat for which he is the Republican nominee.
"Brett is State Senator for Warren and Butler Counties, and he will continue to provide leadership for his constituents as a member of the General Assembly," said Guthrie's campaign manager, Brian Smith.
Guthrie is seeking the Congressional spot left open by retiring incumbent Ron Lewis (R-Cecilia). He faces fellow state Senator David Boswell (D-Sorgho) in November's general election.
Boswell's campaign told PolitickerKY.com its candidate would be impacted more significantly by a special session, given Guthrie's inroads with prominent Republican fundraising circles.
"It will impact [Boswell] more than Brett Guthrie. Brett can bring in Dick Cheney to raise $300,000 for him," said Boswell's campaign spokesman, Jim Cole.
Meanwhile, Guthrie's campaign remains focused on articulating its message and their candidate's back story.
"The Guthrie for Congress campaign is looking forward to talking to Second District voters about ending our nation's unsustainable dependence on foreign oil, keeping taxes low to foster job creation, pursuing solutions to lower the cost of health insurance, and bringing a much-needed change in attitude to Washington D.C.," said Smith. "Voters will also hear about Brett's impressive background - West Point graduate, veteran of the 101st Airborne Division, manufacturer, husband and father, pro-life Senator, and protector of the Second Amendment."
Guthrie earlier pointed to the military background of presumptive Republican presidential nominee, Senator John McCain (R-Ariz.), as a reason that candidate would do well in KY-2 - an aspect of his background Guthrie no doubt will hope to advantage from as well.
With the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee targeting the 2nd District for a potential pickup, Guthrie's campaign was mostly tight-lipped about their own national ties, acknowledging a positive relationship with the DCCC's Republican counterpart.
"The NRCC has been very supportive of Brett's candidacy," said Smith.
