McConnell's best chance to be majority leader

U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell's (R-Louisville) race for majority leader isn't going so well. Months ago the senator acknowledged that Republicans retaking the Senate would be "impossible", and his chances have only looked more grim since then. Publicly, he's maintained hope that they can hold onto their endangered seats.

If they can pull that off -- and that's a very big if --  their best chance to pick up a seat could come from Barack Obama. If the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee were to tap U.S. Sen. Evan Bayh (D-Ind.) to be his vice presidential nominee, the Republican governor of Indiana would presumably appoint a Republican to fill the vacant seat.
